Tips for Using Your Long Weekend Wisely

This weekend is Easter, which means most of Trinidad and Tobago has from Holy Thursday to Easter Monday off (from work). Most people use the days off to go on a mini vacation or spend time with family, but if there are no plans on your agenda, here are a few tips to help you use it wisely.

Be Active

During the normal work-week, the number one excuse used for not exercising is a lack of time. Having a four-day holiday is the perfect opportunity to get yourself off the couch and go do something different. Go for a walk around your neighbourhood, take a hike, swim at the beach or even do some work around the house or yard. Even if it’s the simplest task, getting your body moving when you have the time, can kick-start something you never knew you had in you – a love for movement. Getting your body moving and blood flowing has more benefits than you know; try it out and see for yourself.

Use Time Wisely

Are you studying for an exam, thinking about learning something new, or just dying to pick up that book you’ve had on your bedside for months? Well, there is no better opportunity than this to get yourself started. If you are studying for an exam, use your time wisely between work and play, make a schedule and stick to it. Make the most of the time that you have now because there is no way of getting it back. Do you want to master a new skill or language? Spend some time covering the basics to help nudge you in the right direction. Maybe you will be inspired to keep it up even after the long weekend is over.

Now, let’s talk about that book. While sitting on the couch with a good book for four days sounds like heaven, find other places to read so you are not cooped up all weekend. Take your book to the beach and curl up in the sand, after you have gone for an enjoyable walk, of course.

Prepare

Never finding time in the normal work-week to prepare food, clean or just maintain your household? Do it now! Get out in the yard and remove all of the weeds that have been consuming your garden, prepare and freeze all of the meals you may need for the next few weeks and give your home a good cleaning. All of these things will give you a sense of accomplishment for the weekend, and while you are still making time for fun, coming home to a clean home will be more rewarding than you expect.

Self-care

Something that many people do not get a lot of time for is some good self-care. While going to a spa and getting pampered may not be an option on public holidays, you can do so at home. Get all the necessities and do what makes you happy.

Rest and Recover

While taking time to go out, preparing and using time wisely is essential. It is also important to take some well needed recovery time. Long weekends do not come often and you don’t know when you’ll get another opportunity to rest. Sleep-in later than usual and take your time getting out of bed. Waking up naturally and without an alarm can do wonders for your physical and mental health.
